The southern state of Kentucky has a reputation for being a laid-back destination, filled to the brim with charm, great Bourbon and excellent food. However, it’s also home to some great golf courses. One of these is the Seneca Golf course in Louisville.
Broadview Heights in Cuyahoga County is home to this magnificent course with its rolling fairways and 350 acres of natural splendor. Playing any one of the 27 holes is an absolute pleasure. One could almost be taking a weekend stroll in a well-manicured and cared-for park.
This venerable course was opened in 1940 and has played host to a number of high-profile tournaments in its 80+ year history. Today golfers of all skill levels flock to the Seneca course to test their long game on some lengthy par 4 and 5 holes.
Seneca will test the mettle of those who do not focus on the job at hand. There are several holes that have built a justifiable reputation for punishing errant shots. Take for example the ‘Furnace Run’ – the eighth hole. this is a 603-yard par 5 where players are forced to deal with a wind that will usually be glowing straight into their faces. Players that stray from the straight and narrow on the approach to the green will quickly find their ball in the picturesque pond that lies in wait on the right of the green. Arnold Palmer summed up the attractions of Seneca succinctly when he said “It’s a good testing course.”
Players who want to unwind at the end of a day’s golf will find a warm welcome at the ‘Back Nine Grille’ are simple, yet delicious fare such as burgers, dogs and chicken tenders are the order of the day. But, for many, it is the attraction of chilled beverage that will help to offset the effects of a day in the warm Kentucky sunshine that is the prime attraction.
For those who have not packed their clubs, it is possible to hire a set at Seneca – and for those who want to get back into the groove or sharpen their skills before taking on this sometimes challenging course, Seneca also offers golf lessons. Visitors can expect to pay $28 for a round during the week and $34 on weekends and holidays.
Seneca Golf Course is a delight, not only for its magnificent scenery but also because of the challenge that it poses. If you are in the area – set aside some time and enjoy a fabulous round of golf.
